I'm an urban designer in the City Design Group at Bristol City Council. I work with a group of people who care passionately about the city and the design of its buildings, streets and spaces. As one of the creators of the Design Bristol website, I'm hoping the website will put me in touch with others who care about place-making in the city. I'd like to think that over time we can build the website into a really useful resource, and a stimulating place to discuss urban design.

I'm currently working on the Central Area Action Plan. We've been experimenting with crowd sourcing through the web as part of this plan-making process and have recently won an award for our 'Cherish and Change' consultation initiative. This gave participants an opportunity to pin-point on an on-line map parts of the central area that they cherish and parts that they feel could do with changing to improve them in some way. We're hoping to extend 'Cherish and Change' city-wide and will bring to Design Bristol soon.

I'm particularly interested in the animation of public space. I've just got back from a couple of weeks in Barcelona and was amazed about the amount and the diversity of different types of sport that go on in the public realm in the heart of the city. No wonder the Spanish seem to win so many sports tournaments! But Barcelona can't compete with Bristol's street art scene. I've uploaded some photos of the recent 'Bodies in Space' performance which took place in Stoke's Croft/Broadmead/Nelson Street - really quirky!

Hi Julie. Thanks for your message. Professionally speaking I have been somewhat out of the loop on this agenda over the past couple of years, but have never lost my interest and passion for high quality design in the built (and natural) environment. This new resource is a fantastic opportunity for people like me to keep up to speed and I look forward to the journey!

Hi Julie,

Thanks for your comment. Will have to be brief for now as off to Wales. I haven't blogged yet about it but did keep everyone in touch on a facebook page through September, so look at that http://www.facebook.com/pages/Changing-Spaces/264453823579131. I'm currently holed up writing up the events for a dissertation for a masters at UWE I've done in Urban Design but once that is done I intend to pursue these ideas more....would be great to chat sometime, meet for a coffee in town?
